A mineral involved in hundreds of reactions in the body, including muscle function and the reduction of fatigue.
In high doses, it has a laxative effect (particularly the oxide and sulphate forms). Caution is advised in cases of kidney failure.
300 to 400 mg of elemental magnesium per day, preferably with a meal
Daily magnesium supplementation improves physical performance in healthy older women, such as the ability to stand up from a chair and walking speed.
This randomised crossover study assessed the effects of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure in patients with hypertension. For 8 weeks, participants received 20 mmol/day of magnesium in the form of magnesium oxide. The results indicated that supplementation led to small but significant reductions in blood pressure measured in the doctor’s surgery, at home and over a 24-hour period.
