“Strong” = several concordant meta-analyses or systematic reviews. “Moderate” = one synthesis, or several controlled trials. “Limited” = early trials only. The rating is about the quality of the studies, not about how useful the supplement is.
An Ayurvedic herb sold as a memory booster. Unlike many "brain" supplements, its trials in healthy adults are numerous and point in the same direction.
Trials mainly report mild digestive issues (more frequent stools, cramps, nausea), with no sign of toxicity. Also good to know: the benchmark systematic review highlights that the benefits mainly concern memory, while evidence on reasoning or language remains limited; it calls for trials comparing different doses, which has not yet been done rigorously. Almost all trials last a minimum of 12 weeks: a rapid effect is not what these studies show.
300 to 450 mg per day of a standardized extract for at least 12 weeks — this is the protocol used in almost all positive trials. The effect is not immediate.
Bacopa does not make you faster at learning new information, but it helps you forget it less afterward: studies show that learning speed remains unchanged, while memory retention improves markedly.
